How do I move IMAP server e-mail to a local folder on my PC in Outlook Express?

A) Create a local email folder on your PC

First you need to create a local folder on your PC to store the e-mail messages you wish to archive locally:

  1. Open Outlook Express
  2. Select File > New Folder and the "Create Folder" window appears
  3. Enter a folder name. e.g. Archive2009
  4. Click on the location where you would like to create the new folder. Make sure it's within the "Local Folders" section, not your IMAP section.
  5. Click OK.

B) Move e-mail from the IMAP folder to the local folder

  1. Open the IMAP folder containing the e-mail you need to archive
  2. Select the messages you want to Archive. Use the ctrl-a keyboard shortcut to select all the messages in a folder. The messages should now be highlighted.
  3. Left-mouse-click on the selected messages
  4. Choose Move to Folder from the pop-up menu
  5. From the folder listing select the folder you created above and click OK
  6. The messages you selected are moved from the remote server to the folder on your local machine. Note this may take time if they need to be downloaded.

Messages you archive to a local folder are no longer on the remote email server, and are now stored on your PC.
