How do I transfer a PGP key from one computer to another ? |
Below are instructions for transferring a private PGP key from one PC to another.
A) On the old PC
1 Start > Programs > PGP > PGPkeys . 2 Select your key from the list so it's highlighted. 3 Select "Export" from the Keys menu. The Export Key to File dialog box appears. 4 Select where you want to back up your keys. 5 Select the "Include Private Keys" checkbox. 6 Save to a floppy disk or similar.
B) On the New PC
1 Start PGPkeys. 2 Select "Import" from the Keys menu. The Import dialog box appears. 3 From the "Files of type" dropdown box select "*.asc files" 4 Select the file xxx.asc from the floppy, and click "Open" 5 Select the key in the Pop-Up window, select the "Import" button. 6 Now go back to the PGP keys list and select the key so that it is highlighted 7 Select properties from the Keys menu and put a tick in "implicit trust"
Then set-up the e-mail account on the new pc, and you should then be able to decrypt messages.
C) Decrypting a message
1) Open the email message in Outlook Express by double clicking it so that it opens in its own window. 2) Click the "Decrypt PGP Message" icon. 3) You will then be asked for your secret passphrase, which you need to enter. 4) The message will be decrypted into plain text so that it can be read.
