How do I upload my web site to the server using FTP software CuteFTP version 3.x ?

Once you have completed the pages which make up your web site, you will need an FTP program to upload your pages to your web space. CuteFTP is available for Windows: click here to download
Other FTP packages available at: http://tucows.enta.net

The following instructions are for CuteFTP, however most FTP programs are very similar.

After installing CuteFTP, open it up. (If the 'Wizard' runs, then cancel the wizard.) You should be presented with the FTP site manager window as shown below:-

Click on the Add site button to enter your site details

When adding your site details to the FTP program, you will need to enter the information provided by Swift when your domain was set-up. Check the information against which Swift Server your site is based on. Always use lowercase.

  • Site Label Enter a friendly name of your choice for your site
  • Host Address (Sometimes known as FTP host) Enter www.yourdomain.co.uk
  • User ID (or Login) Enter your web space USERNAME (always enter in lowercase)
  • Password Enter your web space PASSWORD (always enter in lowercase)
  • Initial Remote Directory
For Server types 1 & 2 enter: /httpdocs (always enter in lowercase)
    Server Type 3 to 8 enter: /web
    (always enter in lowercase)
    Server Type 10 to 24 enter: /httpdocs
    Server Type 50 to 60 enter: /httpdocs

  • Initial Local Directory Enter the path to the folder on your C: drive which contains your pages. TIP: click on the ... button to browse your drive.
  • Note: within the Advanced options tab, you have the option for PASV (or Passive) mode. Regular modem connections shoul not use this. ADSL connections, using NAT should use PASV mode.

Enter your site details as shown above, double check they are correct, then click the OK button. Click CONNECT on the site manager window. CuteFTP will then dial a connection, and connect to your domain. Once connected, CuteFTP displays your local files in the left hand window, and the files on your domain space in the right hand window.

To upload files from your local hard drive to your domain space, simply highlight the files in the left hand window, then press the 'Ctrl' and the 'PageUp' keys together. See CuteFTP help for further features of CuteFTP.

Important Note Your default page (Home Page) must be named index.html otherwise it will not automatically load upon entering the site. Please also note that the Server is case sensitive to file names, therefore we recommend that you always use lower case.
