How Do I upload or publish my web site to the server using Windows Web publishing wizard to a site with FrontPage extensions installed ?

Uploading For Users of Windows Web publishing Wizard -
Website has FrontPage Extensions installed

How Do I Publish Using Windows Web publishing wizard?
The web page wizard allows you to publish pages to your web site. It provides a simple approach to setting up single, or small collections of pages. It's main disadvantage is that it does not show what is already on the web server, so records must be kept of what work you have done. Otherwise, you may overwrite essential work.

This FAQ covers using the wizard to transfer via FrontPage Extensions
If you do not have the extensions installed, either use FTP to upload pages (see FAQs), or contact Swift Internet to have them installed

Uploading

To begin the process of uploading your page, open the Web Wizard:

Enter the location of the page(s) you wish to publish

If you are using the wizard for the first time, it will ask you for a name to remember the settings for the upload. The name you give it will only be for easy recognition.

Select advanced, then choose from the connection methods. Automatic select will find the frontpage extensions.

Then enter the URL for the web site your wish to publish.
This will be in the form http://www.domain/location of the public folder. To ensure the correct folder location is chsoen see the notes below

URL Notes

For Server Types 1 & 2: (http://www.yourdomain) with directory /httpdocs
For Server Type 3 to 7: (http://www.yourdomain) with directory /web
For Server Type 10 to 24: (http://www.yourdomain) with directory /httpdocs

The wizard will now ask for the URL for the Web server and the target directory where the new pages will be placed.

Enter the full path for where the file wants to be published to:

Target URL Notes
For Server Types 1 & 2:
http://www.yourdomain/public_html/sub folder (if needed)

For Server Type 3, 6 and 7:
http://www.yourdomain/web/sub
folder (if needed)

For Server Type 4 and 5:
http://www.yourdomain/../../web/sub
folder (if needed)

Thats it. The wizard will try to connect. Select the appropriate connection method.

The wizard will ask for account details to log into your site.

Username notes

On SERVER TYPES 1 and 2 your username will be that supplied by Swift Internet.

On SERVER TYPE 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 (and later) the username will always be webmaster

If log on is successful, the wizard will publish your selected pages to the location you specified.

Important Note
Your default page (Home Page) must be named index.html
otherwise it will not automatically load upon entering the site. Please also note that the Server is case sensitive to file names, therefore we recommend that you always use lower case.

How Do FrontPage Extensions Affect Publishing?

  • The FrontPage Server Extensions are a set of programs that you or your Web hostingservice can install on a Web server to support administering, authoring, and browsing a FrontPage Web. While it is not essential that you host FrontPage-based Web sites on a server that has the FrontPage Server Extensions installed, some FrontPage features are enabled by the Server Extensions, including:
  • Hit counter -- keeps track of the number of hits (visitors) to the page it resides on
  • Form handler -- sends form results to a text file, e-mail address, or database
  • Discussion form -- allows users to send comments to the page, and displays all comments
  • Search form -- allows users to search for items on the Web
  • Multi-user authoring -- allows multiple users to edit and author the same Web site at the same time
  • Remote authoring and administration -- allows users with authoring rights to edit and author directly on the Web, and allows users with administrative rights to perform user and site management from a remote computer
  • If you include any of these features in your FrontPage Web, you need to publish to a domain that has FrontPage Server Extensions installed; otherwise, the features will not work.
