Dealing with Spam for Plesk control panel users. Servers 1 to 2 and 10 to 19

Dealing with Spam for Plesk control panel users. Servers 1 to 2 and 10 to 19.

To reduce the amount of spam you're receiving we suggest making the changes shown below.

1) Change the sensitivity of the spam filter in your control panel.
We suggest changing the "Hits required for spam" to a lower number of 3 or even 2. The spam settings are shown in this tutorial:
"
Using the Plesk Anti Spam System"

There are two options in the control panel for dealing with e-mail which the server detects as spam:-

  • a) "Mark as spam and store in mailbox", also known as Tag and Deliver. This options adds the word "spam" to the subject of the e-mail, thus allowing you to set-up a mail rule in your e-mail application. We have instructions for setting up spam mail rules at the following links.
    Outlook Express
    Outlook 2000 & XP

  • b) Delete. Selecting this option means that any email which the server thinks may be spam will be deleted. Use this option with caution. We suggest using option 'a' shown above until you are confident that the anti-spam system is correctly detecting spam.

2) Change the main mailbox from a "catch-all" mailbox to named email aliases.
If you are receiving spam to nonexistent e-mail addresses we suggest removing the catch-all mailbox facility, and adding e-mail aliases. This will set the server to reject any e-mail which is not sent to a genuine email address.

To remove the catch-all facility, log into your plesk control panel,
Click the Mail icon.
Click the preferences icon.

Change the setting: "Mail to nonexistent user" to "Reject" and click OK.

To add email aliases to the box, log into your plesk control panel,
Click the Mail icon.
Click the email address.
Click the Add New Mail Alias icon.
We have a tutorial covering this at "
Adding an E-mail Alias to an email account"
