Step 1: Check your dial up settings
Getting to Dial Up Networking.
The Dial up Networking panel can be found in:
- My Computer
- Dial-up Networking
Select the desired account by RIGHT clicking on it and selecting properties.
Once in to the dial up account properties, you are presented with a series of option tabs
General - Should display the Tel number for Swiftserve, whether the area codes are in use and what modem / ISDN devices the connection is trying to use. If you have more than one device, you can interchange them..
If you are using the area code rules then the

Server Types - The protocol rules are displayed here. The options suited for Swiftserve are displayed below. However, Windows 98 turns on "Log on to Network" and all the protocols to begin with. This slows down your connection and should be cleared to match the settings below.

Likewise the TCP/IP settings should be left to auto under normal scenarios, as the Dial up server will assign all this at connection time.

Scripting - this is not used on our dial up.
Multilink - Not normally used due to new technologies rendering it obselete.

Step 2: Checking modem functionality and dialing properties.
The modem applet is found in
- My Computer
- Control Panel
- Modems (Yellow phone icon)

Click on the "Diagnostics" tab brings up the initital checker to ensure that Windows can see the modem and "talk" to it.

Select the port that the modem is located on and click "more info". A successful test will produce a results sheet like the one below:

Any indication of failure at this point suggests Windows will not able to see the modem, either due to:
A: Hardware failure
B: Another program is blocking the data channel (say fax, or another modem reliant application)
C: Driver duplication - Windows sees more than one device and has picked the wrong one.
Usually, the modem device needs reinstalling to sort this problem out. Please consult the vendor on how to do this.
Other options to check
Modem properties button
This enable you to check the modem connection speed. A typical speed limit is shown below.

The dialing properties option is also important, as you may find the area codes and dial methods may have corrupted. A typical setup is shown below.
3: Check your access details
- My Computer
- Control Panel
- Internet Options
- Select the "Connections" tab

Firstly, ensure the system has a default dial up connection selected and that the option to dial default connection is selected.
Then select "Settings" and check the usernames and passwords, on the panel below.

Tips
Reboot the machine after making changes, as it forces them to "bed in"
If you have a logon panel when you boot, don't click cancel as it knocks out the MS client and may turn off the passwords mechanism.
If the guide above does not resolve the problem, ensure you have the Windows 98 CD before calling in.
