Troubleshooting Dial-up problems - Windows ME

Trouble shooting dial up connections for Windows ME

The dial up mechanism within Windows ME is designed to be self maintaining. However, over time, it can malfunction and may periodically require checking.

Step 1: Check your dial up settings

Getting to Dial Up Networking.

The Dial up Networking panel can be found in:

  • Start
  • Settings
  • Dial Up Networking

Select the desired account by RIGHT clicking on it and selecting properties.

Once in to the dial up account properties, you are presented with a series of option tabs

General - Should display the Tel number for Swiftserve, whether the area codes are in use and what modem / ISDN devices the connection is trying to use. If you have more than one device, you can interchange them..

If you are using the area code rules then the

Networking - The protocol rules are displayed here.

Likewise the TCP/IP settings should be left to auto under normal scenarios, as the Dial up server will assign all this at connection time.

Security - Windows ME allows to enter Access details straight into the dial up. An alternative route to this can be found in Step 3

Scripting - this is not used on our dial up.

Multilink - Not normally used due to new technologies rendering it obselete.

Dialing
- This allows you to set the dial up account as default and to tell the system to use it. (Similar to the options found in step 3)

Step 2: Checking modem functionality and dialing properties.

The modem applet is found in

  • My Computer
  • Control Panel
  • Modems (Yellow phone icon)

Click on the "Diagnostics" tab brings up the initital checker to ensure that Windows can see the modem and "talk" to it.

Select the port that the modem is located on and click "more info". A successful test will produce a results sheet like the one below:

Any indication of failure at thi point suggests Windows will not able to see the modem, either due to:

A: Hardware failure

B: Another program is blocking the data channel (say fax, or another modem reliant application)

C: Driver duplication - Windows sees more than one device and has picked the wrong one.

Usually, the modem device needs reinstalling to sort this problem out. Please consult the vendor on how to do this.

Other options to check

Modem properties button

This enable you to check the modem connection speed. A typical speed limit is shown below.

The dialing properties option is also important, as you may find the area codes and dial methods may have corrupted. A typical setup is shown below.

3: Check your access details

  • My Computer
  • Control Panel
  • Internet Options
  • Select the "Connections" tab

Firstly, ensure the system has a default dial up connection selected and that the option to dial default connection is selected.

Then select "Settings" and check the usernames and passwords, on the panel below.

Tips

Reboot the machine after making changes, as it forces them to "bed in"

If you have a logon panel when you boot, don't click cancel as it knocks out the MS client and may turn off the passwords mechanism.

If the guide above does not resolve the problem, ensure you have the Windows ME CD before calling in.

Swift Internet strongly recommends the installation of a suitable anti-virus program and the use of the Microsoft Windows Update to avoid damage by malicious programs.
